We had a very exciting development this week. We have linked with Ed for All and some of their post 16 students had their first session at the allotment. We are looking forward to them being a valuable part of our team. This is a fantastic opportunity to involve young people in community work.

Ed for All Post 16 is an alternative provision supporting young people aged 16 to 25, many of whom are from local boroughs, to access a bespoke Preparation for Adulthood curriculum tailored to their individual needs, aspirations, and future goals. The curriculum is designed around the key Preparation for Adulthood outcomes, including developing independence, employability skills, community inclusion, and health and wellbeing, through meaningful, real-life learning opportunities such as budgeting, travel training, and accessing the local community.

Their involvement in the community project with Heywood in Bloom provides valuable opportunities for young people to develop new practical skills, build teamwork and communication skills, and contribute positively to their local community.

Through working on the community allotment, young people are supported to grow flowers, fruits, and vegetables, promoting responsibility, problem-solving, environmental awareness, and healthier lifestyles, while developing confidence and a sense of belonging within their community.

Even the rain didn’t put the young people off. The students made great use of the greenhouse space to stay dry while continuing their work, planting seeds and remaining fully engaged throughout the session.

The students learned about the different flowers, fruits, and vegetables growing within the allotment and took part in planning future projects, helping to build ownership, teamwork, and community engagement. They then got fully involved in hands-on planting activities, including sowing flower seeds, planting tomatoes and strawberries, repotting chilli plants, and earthing up the potatoes.

There was fantastic enthusiasm from all involved, with students working together outdoors, developing practical life skills, confidence, resilience, and a real sense of achievement.

They also demonstrated responsibility and respect for the shared community space by ensuring they cleaned up after themselves and looked after the environment around them.

The students are already looking forward to harvesting the fresh produce and using the ingredients to prepare healthy meals back in the Ed for All kitchen, bringing learning full circle from growing to cooking.

Opportunities like this are what Preparation for Adulthood is all about developing independence, teamwork, community inclusion, healthy living, and real-life practical skills through meaningful experiences.
