About the event
In medieval Britain and northern Europe, holly and ivy could represent life enduring through winter, protection of the household, and hopes for the return of spring. Bringing them indoors around Christmas also fitted older midwinter customs in which greenery marked the turning of the year and made the house feel festive during the darkest season.
Christian symbolism was later layered onto those traditions. Holly became associated with Christ: its prickly leaves with the crown of thorns and its red berries with blood. Ivy, because it clings and remains green, could represent faithfulness, persistence, or eternal life.
What better way can there be to start the Christmas Season than by making your own unique wreath to hang on your door, welcoming visitors and giving something nice to talk about?
